Heaving To

Purpose of heaving to: To wait out a storm, for rest, to reef, or waiting for a dinghy to come aboard.

Windward:
1. Sheet in the main
2. Tack through the wind without releasing jib
3. Wait until boat stalls, then lash wheel/tiler (wheel to windward/tiller to leeward)
4. Boat will slip to leeway 45 degrees off the wind 1-2 knots

Downwind:
1. Steer off the wind until the main blankets the head sail
2. When the head sail collapses, bring head sail over to the opposite side of the main and tie off the sheet
3. The boat will slowly round up into the wind
4. Wait until boat stalls, then lash wheel to windward (tiller to leeward)
5. Boat will slip to leeway 45 degrees off the wind 1-2 knots

To get out:
1. Release the sheet of the head sail
2. Unlash wheel/tiller and turn to the opposite side (leeward for wheel/windward for tiller
3. Re-sheet the head sail when back on the original tack
