Newport Beach is a scenic sailing location with lots to offer for the beginning, intermediate, and advanced sailor. The harbor has some of the most commendable sailing instruction facilities in Southern California, such as Orange Coast Community College (for smaller keel boats) and Marina Sailing (for cruising class sail boats). Newport Beach also hosts many inner harbor and coastal racing opportunities as well, such as yacht club sponsored beer can races during the summer months, Marina Sailing's Racing Series (twice a year out of Newport Beach), and the infamous Newport to Ensenada Race.
South of Newport Beach Harbor are the scenic beaches of Crystal Cove, Laguna Beach, and Dana Point. North of the harbor is Huntington Beach, Sunset Beach, Seal Beach, and Long Beach.
Average wind speeds range anywhere between 4-9 mph inside the harbor and 5-12 mph along the coast. Although the winds can be pretty light at times, Newport Beach has one of the most scenic harbors and coastlines in Southern California.
